The Legislative Framework
The primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in the United Kingdom is The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974; also referred to as HASAW. The Act sets out the general duties which employers have towards employees and members of the public, and employees have to themselves and each other, the Act is an Enabling Act, which allows the Secretary of State to make further laws (known as regulations), without the need to pass another Act of Parliament.
