The Freedom of Information Act 2000
You have always been able to write into the Borough Council to ask for information about the area, things that we do, decisions we make and documents we produce, but now the Freedom of Information Act gives you- the legal means to do this with a time limit for us to respond
- access to a wide range of Council held information
The Act comes into force in two stages
Stage 1
By February 2003. all local authorities had to produce a Publication Scheme. This explains the different sorts of information available from Councils.
Stage 2
From 1 January 2005 onwards, you have the right to e-mail or fax us or write in to ask us for information - see contact details above. There are some exceptions, set out in the Act, such as personal information, information provided in confidence and information connected with our investigations or legal proceedings. If we have the information and it is not covered by one of the exceptions, you should receive it within 20 working days. Most of the information will be available free of charge.
