School league tables deliver extra data

  • Published:Wednesday, 12 January 2011

Parents looking at the school league tables published today will be able to access information about how schools spend their money. They will also be able to see how they perform in providing a rounded academic education for children.

The new data comes as part of the Department for Education's contribution to the government’s commitment on transparency, openness and accountability.

Also included is information on how many GCSE pupils meet the new 'English Baccalaureate' requirements: achieving grades A*-C in five core subjects. The core subjects counted in the English Baccalaureate are maths, English, two science qualifications, a foreign language and either history or geography.

Further details, including analysis of the league table results overall, are available from the Department for Education.

Spending data school-by-school

The spending data, published for the first time alongside the performance data, allows the general public and interested parties to:

  • look at how much individual schools spent per pupil last year on areas such as teaching staff, energy and catering
  • download the raw data underlying the tables if they want to do more detailed analysis

Schools have always been able to compare their spending with other schools. Thanks to this new information, parents can now find out whether the school down the road is achieving better exam results while spending less money. The information will enable parents to ask questions of their local schools.
