Doctors who attend patients either in the community or in hospital have a statutory duty to inform the appropriate officer for the district of any case of food poisoning (proven or suspected), dysentery, cholera, typhoid or paratyphoid fever and viral hepatitis. These are called notifiable diseases.

Food poisoning is defined as 'any disease of infectious or toxic nature caused by the consumption of food or water'.

The Commercial and Licensing Section is responsible for investigating the source and controlling the spread of both notifiable and some non-notifiable diseases.

Upon receipt of such notifications a member of the Commercial and Licensing Section will contact you by letter or telephone to ask you some questions.

The information provided regarding what you've eaten, the places visited is vitally important in the investigation of food poisoning and its prevention.

All information given is dealt with in strict confidence. If information suggests that a particular premises may be responsible or a particular food then further investigation can take place at the premises or food samples may be tested.

You may contact us directly if you think your illness has been caused by food from a restaurant or other food business.
