Regional Spatial Strategy

View pages in this section

The West Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) is a spatial planning document covering Warwickshire and the neighbouring authorities across the West Midlands. Its purpose is to allocate housing and employment land targets, and set strategic policies to help guide the creation of Local Development Frameworks.

It is presently part of the national planning system, with its main purpose is to provide a long term land use and transport planning framework for the region. The framework determines (amongst other things) the scale and distribution of housing and economic development across the region, investment priorities for transport, and sets out policies for enhancing the environment.

Despite Government's intention to abolish the RSS, it still forms part of North Warwickshire's Local Development Framework, and you can download it from the West Midlands Regional Assembly website.

April 2010 Changes to the West Midlands Regional Assembly

The West Midlands Leaders Board (WMLB) along with Advantage West Midlands, as the Responsible Regional Authorities, took forward all Regional Spatial Strategy work as part of the Strategy for the West Midlands from 1st April 2010. The Regional Strategy now consists of the Regional Economic Strategy (RES) and the West Midlands RSS January 2008, which incorporates the Phase One revision.

Following the wind up of the West Midlands Regional Assembly (WMRA) on 31st March 2010, the WMRA website now acts as an archive site and is available at http://www.wmraarchive.org.uk/. For further information regarding the Strategy for the West Midlands, please view the WMLB website at www.wmleadersboard.gov.uk.
