CCTV Overview

There are several public space CCTV schemes operating within North Warwickshire to help detect and deter crime, so that North Warwickshire is a safer community for residents and visitors. "Public space" simply means that the CCTV cameras monitor areas that are accessible to the general public, which includes streets, civic spaces and parks etc.
How is it controlled?
A number of Acts of parliament including the Data Protection Act 1998 provide a legal framework under which public CCTV systems must operate.
The system is operated by North Warwickshire Borough Council under a code of practice jointly agreed with scheme partners, which conforms to the Information Commissioners Guidelines. NWBC is also a member of the Professional CCTV Managers Association. For more information about the PCMA please click on the link: http://www.pcma.org.uk/
This Code of Practice identifies issues such as who may have access to the Control Room and guidelines for the operators to ensure that the individual's privacy is respected, and the rights of the public to see images that have been recorded.
How does it operate?
The system is operated by North Warwickshire Borough Council, and is monitored in a Control Room which is staffed 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Images from the cameras are recorded and held for 31 days. If there is no legitimate reason to keep the recording beyond this period i.e. it is being used as evidence in a court case, the recorded images are erased.
How do I apply for access to information held on the CCTV System?
If you wish to apply for access to information held on the CCTV System, you must complete a Subject Access Request form. The form may be downloaded or may be obtained from the Main Reception at The Council House.
