Carbon Monoxide – The Silent Killer

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that you can’t see, hear, smell or taste. It can be produced by anything that burns carbon-based fuels, such as:

  • Gas Fires, Hobs and portable Heaters
  • Log burners
  • Open fires
  • Any heating system using oil, diesel, petrol

CO can affect anyone so, it’s important to know the symptoms to look out for. The symptoms can be viewed on the link below or watch the short You Tube video by Cadent Gas.

If you suspect CO then you need to act quickly, open all windows and doors, move outside into fresh air and call Gas Emergency Services on 0800 111 999.

Having a working CO monitor can save your life, or that of a loved one, and an alarm is the best way to inform you that CO is present. North Warwickshire Citizens Advice (NWCA) can provide eligible clients with a FREE CO Monitor to ensure they are safe at home. They are available if you are an owner, renting from a private landlord or living on a boat. Please either drop in to the NWCA offices at Parish Rooms, Welcome Street, Atherstone , CV9 1DU on: Monday, Tuesday or Friday 10am – 2pm, or email: energy@nwca.org.uk or tel: Freephone 0808 250 5715.
