Advice for the bereaved
If your partner has died and you are the only adult occupying your home, then you may be entitled to a reduction in your Council Tax.
Single person discount
People who live alone are eligible to receive a 25% reduction in their bill.
To qualify you should complete a single person discount form, declaring that you are now the sole occupier of your home and give the date this change took place.
If the property belonging to the person who has died remains empty, then the person now responsible for the property may qualify for 100% exemption from Council Tax.
Certain information is required so we can determine whether any Council Tax is Payable.
You will need to confirm details of when probate was granted.
Housing benefit or Council tax support
If you are in receipt of Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support then you should contact the Council Tax and Housing Benefits Team who will be able to advise you about your claim - details below.
If you did not previously claim as a couple, you may now be able to get help with paying your Council Tax and Rent, if your income is low.

You should apply straight away if you think you may qualify for help with your Council Tax and Rent.
If you rent your property from the Council and the tenancy is in the name of your partner who has died, then you should contact the Housing Department who will be able to advise you regarding your tenancy rights.
If the person who has died lived alone and they were renting their home from the Council, then you should contact the Housing Department as soon as possible to formally end the tenancy.
It is important that you contact them as soon as possible so that you are advised of the correct procedure for formally ending the tenancy.
