North Warwickshire Squash Championship

Duane crowned as champion

On Wednesday evening Duane Ward from Coleshill was crowned the first North Warwickshire Squash Champion.

Three months ago all the players who play in the Squash leagues at Arley Sports Centre, Polesworth Sports Centre and Coleshill Leisure Centre were invited to participate in the very first North Warwickshire Open Squash Tournament. 27 Players across all three centres enthusiastically took up the challenge. 32 matches later, with only one cancellation because of injury, North Warwickshire had its first champion.

Finals day was held on Wednesday 23rd when Arley’s James Morris and

Richard Barrs & Arley’s Ian Pear and Duane Ward from Coleshill; battled it out in the semi finals, both were great battles with Richard coming out on top of a great duel with James Morris (3-1) and Duane proving too strong for Ian in the other (3-1).

The 3rd/4th Place game pitted old rivals James Morris against veteran Ian Pear with James coming out on top of an attritional physical battle (3-1), no quarter was given, the final proved to be just as intense with Richard taking the first game, provoking a decisive reaction from Duane who took the next three games to secure the trophy and Champion trophy.

The competition was co- sponsored by MEB Training and North Warwickshire Borough Council with Keir Beaumont from MEB Training presenting the Trophies and the prizes.

All of the players hoped that this, hopefully, will be the start of more competitions between the three centres. With the cup being the individuals chance to shine.

Ian Pear commented “This competition was a great success. It should be played every year”. He continued “Being able to play players from other leagues always tests your skills, and means that you get to visit and play at the other centres.”
