New Chapter for Arley Sports Centre

Published on Wednesday, 28th November 2018

North Warwickshire Borough Council will officially hand over the keys for Arley Sports Centre to Elite Sports Development Company on 14 December 2018.

The Centre will no longer be run by the Council. The leisure facilities at Atherstone, Coleshill and Polesworth will continue to be owned and managed by the Council.

Back in January 2016, due to ongoing pressures on its budgets, the Borough Council declared its ‘preferred option’ to close Arley Sports Centre.  However, after 12 weeks of community consultation and constructive discussions with interested local groups, including the Keep Arley Sports Centre Open group, the Council responded positively to local suggestions and decided to include the facility in a wide ranging review of leisure, health and wellbeing provision in North Warwickshire.  The externally produced review identified an option to transfer the Centre to another operator, which the Council was able to achieve after negotiations with Elite Sports Development.

Leader of the Council, David Humphreys said: “I am delighted that we have been able to satisfy the needs of the community and keep a Sports Centre available in Arley. We listened to the wishes of local people and to the advice of external consultants.  The outcome of our agreement with Elite is that the Sports Centre will not only remain available to the local community, but that Elite will invest in its services and facilities.  At the same time, the Council will be able to make a much needed financial saving. The transfer is a positive outcome for everyone.  I wish Elite all the best with their new venture.”

The Council is now in the process of informing customers at Arley of their options, both to continue using the Sports Centre, as well as the other leisure facilities in the Borough.
