North Warwickshire Borough Council announces extra funding for CCTV
Published on Tuesday, 27th June 2023

North Warwickshire Borough Council has announced that significant new funding will be provided to enhance the CCTV system in Atherstone.
Using funding from the UK Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), a panel of Borough Councillors last week approved the bid made on behalf of the CCTV partnership.
The decision follows recent announcements by the Borough Council regarding the deployment of Artificial Intelligence enabled mobile cameras, specifically for fly tipping, and further funding for CCTV cameras for use around the Borough.
The bid, which was suggested by North Warwickshire Borough Council as a result of previous temporary funding having ended, will enable the Borough Council, local Police and the Atherstone Town Council to continue its work to improve safety in the town. The work is an important part in ensuring residents are kept safe and feel reassured and the work has led recently to North Warwickshire Borough Council staff working for the partnership receiving formal commendations from the Police for the important work they do monitoring the camera network.
Leader of the Borough Council and Chairman of the UKSPF panel, Councillor David Wright commented following the decision; “I am really pleased that this bid has been unanimously approved by the Borough Council’s panel and it will cement the excellent working relationships that exist in the Town on this important issue. I’m grateful to Borough Council officers for suggesting this bid and for the Town Council for submitting it, showing the benefit of local control of funding such as the UKSPF, such funding previously having being decided more remotely so that local priorities in North Warwickshire often missed out. The Panel have asked all parties to work together on how the current scheme may help other areas develop increased CCTV coverage”.
The bid was one of £1m worth of bids considered last week as North Warwickshire Borough Council seeks to support local projects access the £2.4m funding available until March 2025.
The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is a central pillar of the UK government’s Levelling Up agenda and provides £2.6 billion of funding for local investment by March 2025. The Fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK investing in communities and place, supporting local business, and people and skills.
