What happens if we find stray dogs

If your dog is found straying, the council's officer will pick it up. If it is the first time your dog has been found and your dog has a collar and tag (as required by law) or microchip (with up to date details) that shows where it lives, then an attempt will be made to return the dog to you. However, if you are not at home, your dog has no identity information, or your dog has been caught before, it will be taken to the kennels for safe-keeping until it is claimed.

The dog may be re-homed after eight days if no communication is received from the owner. Unfortunately, in some cases of very old, very aggressive, or ill dogs, new homes cannot be found and the dog has to be put to sleep. Some owners actually abandon their dogs when they become ill, and the council and kennels then provide veterinary care and try to rehome if possible.

Most dogs are taken to the council's kennels which are provided by: Birmingham Dogs Home

Opening hours of our kennels

Once the dog has been taken to the kennels, it is the owners responsibility to collect the animal and make payment to the kennels. If your dog requires veterinary attention whilst in our care, you will be liable to those charges as well.

The kennels will provide you with an official receipt.

Payment needs to be made directly to Birmingham Dogs Home whilst collecting your dog.  Payment can be made by cash, debit card or credit card. Payment must be made in full. We do not offer a payment plan or reduced rate for those in receipt of benefits. Cheques will NOT be accepted.
